Team Development

After gaining a thorough understanding of a client organization’s vision, goals and challenges, we typically begin the team development process by assessing a team’s performance. We then work collaboratively with clients to design a highly customized team program, usually incorporating a series of two- to three-hour group sessions, facilitated over a two- to three-month period. We also provide short-term individual coaching for team leaders to leverage the learning and progress achieved in each session.

Assessing Team Strengths and Areas for Improvement:
We conduct an analysis of a team’s effectiveness based on data gathered through interviews with team members and other individuals with key insight into the team’s performance and dynamics. Interviews are sometimes supplemented with customized questionnaires and customer surveys. Assessment findings form the foundation for the development of team program objectives and session design.

Coaching Team Development:
This series of two- to three-hour sessions focuses on team skill and relationship building through a combination of engaging exercises and the performance of actual work the team needs to accomplish (e.g., team problem-solving and planning activities). Some team performance areas commonly addressed include:

• development of a team’s vision of high performance
• development of team learning goals and ground rules
• clarification of team member roles and responsibilities
• exploration of team members’ work styles, often supported by the “Personal Profile System” DiSC instrument
• development of team communication and planning skills
• development of team conflict management and problem solving skills, often supported by Alexander Hiam’s “Dealing With Conflict” instrument (Thomas Kilmann model)
• improvement of working relationships among team members

Individual Coaching for Team Leaders:
Customized short-term individual coaching helps team leaders
• address issues identified through the team performance assessment
• enhance their team leadership skills
• leverage progress achieved through the team sessions
• support the team’s continued development following the program

Evaluating Team Progress:
Effective follow-up is a critical means of determining the success of a team development program and how best to support a team’s further improvement. We evaluate team progress through a variety of follow-up activities, including interviewing team members, leaders, and customers, etc., and administering team performance assessments.
